Origins
Silent Running are a rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland, originally formed in the early 1980s. The band emerged from the local punk scene under the name The Setz, before evolving their sound and rebranding as Silent Running in 1982

History
Early Years
The original lineup featured:
- Peter Gamble – vocals
- Tony Scott – guitar
- Richard Collett – bass
- Ian Gault – drums
Keyboardist George Beavis joined briefly before being replaced by Alex White. The band signed with EMI Records and released their debut album Shades of Liberty in 1984. The album received critical praise, including a five-star review in Melody Maker, but commercial success proved elusive
Notable singles from this era include:
- Emotional Warfare
- Young Hearts
- Sticks and Stones
Atlantic Years
After parting ways with EMI, Silent Running signed with Atlantic Records, releasing two more albums:
- Walk on Fire (1987)
- Deep (1989)
These albums showcased a more polished, rock-driven sound. Despite strong songwriting and production, the band remained a cult favorite rather than a mainstream success.

- Peter Gamble – vocals
- Tony Scott – guitar
- Richard Collett – bass
