First taste of the Belfast band’s forthcoming sixth studio album

Belfast band Silent Running return with their new single ‘Back Into the Fire’, released across all major digital platforms on 9 October 2026.

The track o;ers the first glimpse of the band’s forthcoming sixth studio album and marks the beginning of the next chapter for a group whose story stretches from the post-punk and new wave landscape of 1980s Belfast to a renewed period of recording and live activity today.

‘Back Into the Fire’ is also the first Silent Running release to feature Stevie Prosser on keyboards, adding a new dimension to the band’s established sound.

A powerful, driving rock song with an unmistakably positive edge, ‘Back Into the Fire’ combines the widescreen, atmospheric sound that has long been a Silent Running trademark with the energy of a band very much focused on what comes next.

Singer Peter Gamble says:

“There’s a real energy and positivity to ‘Back Into the Fire’. It’s a driving rock song and, from the first time we played it together, it just felt like it had something. There’s a sense of moving forward in the song — of taking whatever life throws at you and coming out the other side. It felt like the right track to introduce what we’re doing with the new album.”

A story spanning more than four decades

Formed in Belfast, Silent Running emerged from Northern Ireland’s vibrant early-1980s music scene and went on to sign with EMI, before later signing to Atlantic Records.

The band released their debut album Shades of Liberty in 1984, followed by Walk on Fire in 1987 and Deep in 1989, building a following for their powerful, melodic sound and compelling live performances.

Over the years, Silent Running have shared stages with artists including Simple Minds, Robert Palmer, Talk Talk, The Alarm and Stevie Van Zandt, while their music has continued to find new listeners long after the band’s original 1980s run.

After reuniting, Silent Running returned to the studio with Follow the Light in 2022, followed by their fifth studio album, NORTHSTAR, in 2025.

Recent years have also seen the band back on major stages, including appearances alongside Simple Minds, Madness, Ocean Colour Scene and Texas in Belfast.

Now, with ‘Back Into the Fire’, Silent Running begin the journey towards album number six.

The current line-up features Peter Gamble (vocals/rhythm guitar), Tony Scott (lead guitar/backing vocals), Richard Collett (bass/backing vocals), Gary Kirby (drums/backing vocals) and Stevie Prosser (keyboards).

Silent Running will play Voodoo, Belfast on Friday 6 November 2026, giving fans the chance to hear material from the band’s recent albums alongside songs spanning their career.
