Silent Running release powerful new single ‘Hit and Run’ ahead of new album NORTHSTAR

Northern Irish rock band Silent Running today released their new single ‘Hit and Run’ on all major streaming platforms.

The track is the first release from their forthcoming fifth studio album, NORTHSTAR, set for release in the Autumn on CD and digital via Door Records.

‘Hit and Run’ is a striking anthem about the search for true love in a world of fleeting encounters. Written from a female perspective, the song highlights the band’s evolution as storytellers and musicians. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Peter Gamble says: “The real goal with this album was to connect — to create empathy and move hearts. ‘Hit and Run’ captures the emotional complexity of modern relationships with honesty and depth.”

The new album NORTHSTAR has been described by the band as their best work to date – a bold and emotional collection of songs about love, loss, and life in today’s world. It follows their acclaimed 2022 comeback album Follow the Light and continues a remarkable second chapter for a band once seen as one of Northern Ireland’s biggest musical exports.

Formed in Belfast in the 1980s, Silent Running toured with the likes of Simple Minds, Robert Palmer and Talk Talk, and appeared on iconic music show The Tube. After a three-decade hiatus, the band reformed in 2019, reigniting a devoted fanbase and picking up new followers along the way. Their return has seen them share stages again with major acts including Simple Minds, Ocean Colour Scene and Madness — with a support slot for Texas lined up for this Sunday, August 17th, at Custom House Square, Belfast.

The release of NORTHSTAR is being supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Music Officer Jo Wright commented: “We’re delighted to support Silent Running through our National Lottery arts funding. They were one of the best bands to come out of Northern Ireland in the 1980s — and the magic is still very much alive.”

To mark the release, Silent Running will play a special hometown album launch show at Voodoo, Belfast on Friday 24 October 2025. Tickets are on sale now via Eventbrite.

The current line-up features Peter Gamble (vocals, rhythm guitar), Tony Scott (guitar, backing vocals), Richard Collett (bass, backing vocals), Gary Kirby (drums, programming, backing vocals), with keyboards on the album by David Williams.

For live performances, the band have recently been joined by Stevie Prosser on keyboards.

With NORTHSTAR, Silent Running are proving that some bands don’t just come back — they come back stronger.
